The single most important advice to remember in an emergency

By Guillaume Schaer on May 7, 2019 0

A couple of days ago, Aeroflot flight SU1492 from Moscow to Murmansk was hit by lightning during take off. It seemed to have knocked down part of the equipment of the plane so the pilot decided to return to the airport immediately. Sadly the plane crashed and a fire started in the engine. 41 people lost their lives during that event.

Preliminary reports indicate that some people were stuck in the plane during evacuation while others were trying to retrieve their hand luggages. Pictures and videos of the accident show people leaving the aircraft with their hand luggages. Sadly, it seems that people lost their lives as others wanted to take their belonging with them.

During the safety briefing, you’re always reminded to leave everything behind in an emergency. What’s more valuable? Your life or your laptop? With a bag, you risk breaking the slide, you cannot run as efficiently and you risk blocking people behind you.

To be allowed to fly commercially, an airplane has to go through a lot of tests. One of these is the evacuation test. The manufacturer has to show they can evacuate the airplane in under 90 seconds… That’s very short. Check out below the video showing the evacuation of the largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380. It takes 78 seconds to evacuate more than 800 people…. in the dark… But they’re leaving their bags behind.

So once again, next time you’re flying, listen to the safety briefing and remember the single most important advice they’ll give you:

“In case of emergency, leave all your belongings behind”

It might make the difference between life and death.

The Southwest Companion Pass – take a friend with you

By Guillaume Schaer on November 8, 2018 0

Would you like to take a friend with you on all your next flights? Would you like to discover the World with someone? And would you like to save a lot of money in the process? Today’s trick will only work if you’re based in the US, but it can be a real saving for if you travel regularly with a friend or a partner.

Southwest airlines is the world’s largest Low Cost Carrier. They fly to more than 99 destinations in the US, and Latin America.

Discover the Southwest Companion Pass

Even though Southwest is a Low Cost Carrier, they have an interesting frequent flyer program called Rapid Rewards. The way it works is quite straightforward:

Earning points

When flying with Southwest, you get a minimum of 6 points per dollar spent. When spending money with a Southwest branded credit card, you get a minimum of 1 point per dollar spent (more on that later). There are a few other options to get points through a few of the airline partners.
Redeeming points
There’s no blackout date with Southwest. It means that if a seat can be bought with cash, it can be paid with points.

Status

The most interesting part of the Rapid Rewards program is the tier status. If you earn 35,000 miles in a calendar year (Jan 1st – Dec 31st), you get the A-List status. It comes with priority boarding and extra points when you fly. If you earn 70,000 points in a calendar year, you’re upgraded to A-List Preferred. Even more points and free WiFi. But the most interesting tier is the last one. It’s called the “Companion Pass”:

Companion Pass is the benefit that allows you to choose one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight. To qualify, simply fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 110,000 qualifying points in a calendar year, and you’ll earn Companion Pass for the following full calendar year, plus the remainder of the year in which you earned it.

100 one-way flights. That is a lot of flying. You could do it… or you could look at getting 110,000 points by flying. It means you need to spend more than $10,000 in a calendar year on flight tickets with Southwest. As you’d probably expect from now, there are a few ways to get it way cheaper and it’s actually quite simple. And now is the best way to preparing for it.

How to get 110,000 points quickly

As you saw above, you need to earn 110,000 points in a calendar year to get the Companion pass for the following full calendar year, plus remainder of the year in which you earned it.

It means that if you find a way to earn 110,000 points in January 2019, you’d get the companion pass until December 2020. Almost two years of taking a friend on your next adventures with you.

And guess what? It’s feasible. It’s actually quite easy if you’re a business owner (can be a side hustle).

Enter the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card.

Let’s start with the personal card, the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card. This card costs $99 a year. Chase currently has a special sign-up bonus when you get this card. If you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months of getting the card, you’ll receive 40,000 points. Can you spend a thousand bucks within the next 3 months? I bet you can. As you get 1 point per dollar spent, you should have roughly 41,000 points. Only 69,000 points to go.

Let’s now look at the business card, the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card. This card also costs $99 a year and it’s aimed at business owners. If you’re selling stuff on ebay, you could technically be considered a business owner. Just enter your social security number on the application form. The current sign-up bonus is a bit higher. If you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months of getting the card, you’ll receive 60,000 points. Can you spend three thousands on your business within the next 3 months? If you can’t, I might advise you to work on your business plan. As you also get 1 point per dollar spent, you should have roughty 63,000 points with that card.

It seems you’re now only 6,000 points short of getting the Companion pass. From that point, the easiest might be to spend $6,000 on any of the cards. Or to spend $3,000 on your next Southwest flights. The points for the amount will post immediately. The points for flying will post after you fly. There are more ways that I’ll cover in another article.

How to maximize the duration of your Companion Pass

As you probably understood, the goal now is to have 110,000 points to your account as early as possible in January. The way to optimize this is by taking opportunity of the fact that points earned on your credit card won’t post to your account until the statement period closes.

Therefore you should apply for the card as soon as possible. When the card is approved, you could change the “Bill Due Date” to the end of the month. By doing this, the statement period would closes a few days later, i.e around 4-5 days later.

Then in December, spend the money with the cards to get the bonuses. Sign-up bonuses will then post in early 2019.

Then it’ll be time to fly around… a lot…

Alina went to Tbilisi, Georgia for free

By Guillaume Schaer on August 11, 2018 0

Meet Alina. Alina works at Seedstars. After an assignment in Astana, Kazakhstan, she needed a flight to her home in Kiev, Ukraine. As you might know, the MilesAddict team often helps companies such as Seedstars optimize their trips. Sometimes adding a side trip for free.

She had a few days to spend at home before flying to Mongolia for another event. When she got in touch to request a flight home she mentioned that she would have a few days for a side trip. In our customer file, it says that Alina loves Georgia (the Country). What if we could extend her trip to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia?

It turns out that the flight from Astana to Kiev was the same price as the Astana to Kiev to Tbilisi. For Alina it meant a free flight ticket to see her friends in Georgia… and it didn’t cost a dime for her employer.

Check out the video she prepared after her vacation in Georgia.

More than 48 hours on Emirates First Class for only USD 4,600

By Guillaume Schaer on May 18, 2018 0

Today I’ve heard about an interesting fare out of Johannesburg. It means that you either have to be in South Africa or you have to fly there to get started.

Emirates airlines has a special offer in First Class from Johannesburg to South America. You can fly to Sao Paolo, Rio or Buenos Aires. If you decide to fly to Sao Paolo, you get to fly on the Airbus 380 all the way. Whereas if you decide to fly to Rio or Buenos Aires, it’s on the Boeing 777. Keep in mind that the flight to Buenos Aires stops in Rio.

The fun thing with the Airbus 380 is the inflight shower. Yes you can take a shower at 40,000 ft.

On top of this, you can get unlimited stopover. So you could fly from Johannesburg to Dubai and stay there for a while; then from Dubai to Rio and also stay there for a while; and then from Rio to Buenos Aires before heading back the same route (with or without stopping in Rio and Dubai).

I did not even talk about the chauffeur service, the lounges and the food… Really worth it!

This is how it would look on the map:

Maps generated by the Great Circle Mapper – copyright © Karl L. Swartz.

For that trip we’re looking at about 50 hours on a plane. In some of the best first class seats you can find.

And Emirates sells this for only USD 4,600. It’s still a big chunk of money, but it could work for some people.

But wait, there’s more. As this books in First class, you will get miles for this trip. And you should credit your flights to your Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan card. Here is why.

With Alaska Airlines, you will get status miles computed as 3.5 times the flown distance when flying Emirates First Class.

Segment Flight
duration
Distance
(Miles)
Elite miles Bonus miles Status
88,165 101,380
JNB-DXB 08:05 3,970 13,895 13,895 Member
DXB-GIG 14:20 7,385 25,848 25,848 Member
GIG-EZE 03:30 1,240 4,340 4,960 MVP
EZE-GIG 02:50 1,240 4,340 5,580 MVP Gold
GIG-DXB 14:00 7,385 25,848 33,233 MVP Gold
DXB-JNB 08:10 3,970 13,895 17,865 MVP Gold

As you see, this trip gives you 88,000 status miles. You even gain status during your trip. It gets you only 2,000 miles away from Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan’s top status: MVP Gold 75K. One option to get 2,000 miles is to fly two return trips between Dubai and Muscat, Oman. When you reach MVP Gold 75K, you get 50,000 extra bonus miles.

Now let say you did the flight above and the extra 2,000 miles. You will have roughly 150,000 miles in your Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan account. This is enough for a return ticket in First Class on Cathay Pacific between Paris and Hong Kong.

Now you should realise that for USD 4,600, you’re not only getting 50 hours on Emirates First Class, but also 24 hours on Cathay Pacific.

Is it worth it? It depends on your situation, but it’s quite fun.

Discover how Igor went to India for free

By Guillaume Schaer on May 9, 2018 0

Let me introduce you to Igor. Igor works for Seedstars as Regional Manager Central and Eastern Europe. As part of his job, he gets to travel all around the region from his home base in Kiev, Ukraine. As you might be aware, the MilesAddict team regularly helps Seedstars and other companies optimize their trips around the world, allowing them to save time and money.

A few weeks ago Igor contacted us as he had to fly to Astana, Kazakhstan for a company event. He also advised us that he had a few days after the event to go “anywhere“. His words were: “why don’t you impress me?“. We got back to him with an option to fly from Kiev to Astana and continue to New Delhi after the event. As crazy at it sound, the flight from Kiev to Astana to Kiev was the same price as the Kiev to Astana to Delhi and back to Kiev.

Check out how happy he is after 9 days spent in India.

Impacted by an airline strike in Europe? Get up to EUR 600 in compensation

By Guillaume Schaer on April 24, 2018 1

Sometimes travel quirks happen. Sometimes your flight is canceled or delayed. It might be due to weather, technical problem, a strike or some other operational issue.

Did you know that if your flight ticket touches Europe or the US, you can get up to EUR 600 in compensation.

Moreover, since April 17th, airlines strikes are eligible for compensation under the EU rule EC261.

Even better, you can claim for compensation on flights from the last 3 years.

I usually work with Airhelp to claim my compensations. They do all the work and they get paid only if you get compensated. They can even dig into your email (if you allow them) and find flights eligible for compensation.

If you have been affected by one of the latest airline strikes (Air France or Lufthansa), head to Airhelp to claim your compensation.
